17 Tips: Electrical Safety for Your Project
Safety whenever doing electrical work should always be the first thing on your mind above all else. All it takes is 5 milliamps of current to kill you. Below is a list of preventitive measures to avoid electrocution (or severe electrical shock).
1. Always shut off power to the circuit you are going to work on first.
2. Close the panel door to the circuits and leave a lock-out / tag-out OR a distinguishing mark (maybe on a piece of tape)
letting others know that it is unsafe to turn on the breaker that was turned off by you (because you are still working on it).
3. Always keep a flashlight near your main service panel. Check batteries regularly.
4. Always check for power on the device you are going to attempt to work on first.
5. Use only UL approved electrical parts or devices.
6. Never wear a wedding band (a gold, silver or platinum ring) while working on an electrical project.
7. Wear rubber soled shoes whenever working on an electrical job. If the floor is damp, use a rubber mat to stand on or old
pieces of wood. ( 2 X 4's)
8. Use GFCI receptacles where specified by your local code.
9. Always use fiberglass or wooden ladders. NEVER use a ladder made of aluminum.
10.Use receptacle caps for younger children in the house.
11.NEVER use an extension cord as a permanent means of power!
12.Don't install fuses or breakers that have a higher amperage rating than the wire that is currently installed for that circuit.
13.When working with electricity, never touch metal pipes.
14.Never alter the prongs on a cord to fit a certain receptacle.
15.Shut off power before drilling into walls or ceilings.
16.When applicable, always wear your safety gloves, eye-protection gear, head protection gear and ear protection gear.
17.NEVER go beyond the second to the topmost stair on a ladder.

Safety First Always!
Safety should be the primary concern of anyone working with electricity. Although most household repairs are simple and straightforward, always use caution and good judgement. Remeber...common sense prevents accidents!
The basic rule if electrical safety is: Always turn off power to the area or device you are working on. At the main service panel, remove the fuse or shut off the breaker that controls the circuit you are servicing. Then check to make sure the power is off by testing for power with a neon circuit tester. Restore power only when the repair or replacement of project is complete.
Follow all these safety tips at all times. Never attempt an electrical project beyond your skill or confidence level. Never attempt to repair or replace your main service panel or service entrance head. These are jobs for a qualified electrician and require that the power company shuts off power to your house.
